Police are investigating Abu Bakr Ba'asyir, a 64 year old Islamic radical Indonesian cleric. He was jailed for four years by the Suharto government, and moved to Malaysia in the 1980s. He returned to Indonesia in 1998 and now heads the Mujahedin Council of Indonesia (MMI). He campaigns for the adoption of sharia (Islamic) law in Indonesia. Police suspect Ba'asyir is connected with the al Qaeda organization. In Java, police arrested ten men for advocating an Islamic state.
