TV news network al Jazeera released an interview with two al Qaeda leaders, who are apparently hiding in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city. Al Qaeda leader was referred to in the past tense, indicating that bin Laden was dead. Karachi contains many well organized Islamic militant groups that support al Qaeda. There are also powerful criminal gangs that will support anyone who can pay. The police are stretched thin when trying to penetrate the militants and gangs to reach al Qaeda leaders hiding in the city.

In Kashmir, in several incidents, three rebels, six civilians and three policemen were killed. Rebels are trying to discourage Kashmiris from voting in the September 16 local elections.

In Pakistan, police arrested five Islamic militants and charged them with plotting to kill the president.
