The United States Navy is reorganizing its force of 88,000 reservists. Two major changes are the expansion of the reserve SeaBees and the creation of a force of 12-20,000 reserve Masters-at-Arms (military police). This is in addition to the ongoing (since September 11, 2001) expansion of the active duty Masters-at-Arms force from 2,000 to 9,000. The reserve SeaBee force will be increased to 12,000 sailors. Training reserve sailors for these two expansion projects will take several years. But the navy sees the reserves as a good source of "surge" capability in the area of security and construction of new facilities (usually overseas.)
