Fighting has flared up again in the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott. Gunfire can be heard coming from the presidential palace. Nearby residents say the palace guards fled when it appeared that the rebels were going getting an edge in the fighting. Gunfire and explosions could still be heard in various parts of the city as army units loyal to president Taya entered the city and encountered groups of rebels at dawn.
