NLP rebels ambushed an army unit participating in a rescue mission in the wake of recent typhoons. Ten soldiers were killed, and the NLP rebels insisted the troops were on a military mission. But over a thousand Filipinos have died in recent typhoons, and troops traditionally go in to provide aid. Over 160,000 people have fled the damage done by the two large storms.
