The U.S. paid over $330,000 to each of three informants in the southern Philippines, in return for information that led to the death of senior Abu Sayyaf leaders. Normally, information like this is kept secret, to protect the informants from retaliation from other terrorists. But in this case, the rewards were made public, but not the identity of the recipients. This approach is meant to encourage other Moslems in the southern Philippines to provide information on Islamic terrorists.
