At dawn, soldiers and sailors fought several battles with tribe based criminal gangs outside Port Harcourt, the main city in the  Niger Delta's oil region. Several dozen people were killed, both gangsters and civilians. The military won't admit anything, but it is suspected that armed military speedboats attacked a village controlled by one of the Ijaw gangs.
