The US is spending $47.7 million to hire 161 elite security guards, and sixty support staff, to provide security for the American embassy in Kabul. Most of the guards are former military (Special Forces, SEALs, and the like.) The US Marine Corps used to provide embassy security, but is turning this responsibility over to the State Department at the end of 2003.
