Special Forces efforts to make friends in unruly southeastern Afghanistan paid off when local villagers tipped off US troops of a planned rocket attack on the buildings the Americans were using. Eight 107mm rockets had been set up in the hills overlooking the small US base on the Pakistan border. It is thought that this attack was planned by members of Hezb-i-Islami, a radical Islamic group led by warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.

In the north, the warlord battles have died down and the collection of illegal weapons has continued.
