Work on the International Space station required nine US spacewalks last year, a tie for the record of most US spacewalks in a given year. This year another 22 are scheduled with 29 planned in 2002 and 43 in 2003. Each spacewalk is tedious and dangerous and requires months of planning to choreograph every move and design every needed tool.--Stephen V Cole
