Procurement: Taiwan Upgrades Helicopter Force

Archives

September 5, 2007: Taiwan is
retiring its 90 UH-1H helicopters, and replacing them with 60 (perhaps followed
by 30 more later) UH-60M models. It is ordering those from the United States,
along with thirty AH-64D helicopter gunships. Taiwan already has fifty AH-1W
gunships, which will not be phased out as quickly as the UH-1Hs. There is
however, that party politics will stall this purchase, which the military has
already requested. Some faction in parliament advocate cutting back on
procuring new weapons, so as not to antagonize China.
