In Iraq, the marines knew they would be traveling farther, and faster, than any marine division in history. Improvisations had to be developed. An inexpensive rack (gypsyrack.com) for hummers was found, and two thousand were bought, and the 25 gallon fuel capacity of the divisions hummers was doubled. The steel rack hangs from the back of the hummer and adds six standard five gallon containers (which can contain fuel or water.) Extra fuel containers were fitted to the divisions tanks and AAVs (Amphibious Armored Vehicles) to increase their range. Marines were told to leave everything behind that was not absolutely necessary, and prepare to get by on one MRE a day if the supply situation became really tight. It did, but the preparations paid off and supply problems never slowed the marines down on the road to Baghdad.
