The U.S. Navy, after years of prompting from overworked network systems administrators, and Internet security experts, has installed a navy wide system of Internet monitors so Netwarcom (Naval Network Warfare Command) can constantly watch all navy networks for hacking attempts. Most of the effort, supervised by civilian contractor EDS, searches for patterns of network traffic that indicate a more subtle (and more dangerous) hacking effort that is making a professional effort to sneak in and steal something, or do damage. Most of the network attacks are by amateurs, but even here, the Netwarcom can more easily identify new patterns of attacks, and issue software changes for all navy networks to keep everyone better protected.
